Retailers’ power increases their milk margins
Latest figures from DairyCo show the effect of recent supermarket price wars on margins throughout the milk supply chain. The average farmgate price (the price paid to farmers) of 27 pence per litre, was 12 percent higher the previous year, but still fails to reflect the substantial increase in feed, fertiliser and other inputs. The way in which retailers use our valuable milk as a means to wage war on competitors is unhealthy for all of us.
Free Range Dairy will strive to increase awareness of the value of milk from pasture-based herds and help farmers reduce their reliance on purchased feeds and other inputs, for the benefits of farmers, cows and consumers, rather than the middle-men.
